Why does everyone struggle with money in the military?

I’m 27 looking to enlist and I’m pretty dumb to this. I know i’m going to get roasted and toasted for this question.
Looking at my finances i currently take home about $3,600/mo. I pay 1,100 for my little apartment about 500 on food since I eat for building muscle, it could be about 6-700 when i’m dating. 583 for my car and then subscripitions games random bills and bs is about 300 a month. I’m putting roughly 600 a month in savings after retirement and all that. If I wanted to batten down the hatches and go full survival mode i could save way more
Comparing my income to like an e-3/e-4 from my limited understanding they take home 2k a month with 453 in food and based on the area 1,100 on housing. In my math that makes us making about equal.
Why are so many soldiers in this income bracket struggling? It appears your essentials are covered. Why are so many on food stamps and destitute? I know families are expensive but from my understanding you gain a lot of income with dependents.
What am I missing?
Top Comment: Not everyone is, but many are financially illiterate. More people need to use ACS financial readiness program to learn how to budget, etc.

Top Comment: old guy here. I joined in 1986. i had to have a bank account and we set up direct deposit at reception. Everyone did. It was a brand new requirement. If you didnt have a bank account you would be marched to the bank to open one with the cash you got as cash advance and set up direct deposit which may take a few months to kick in. We all went through a form of payday activities in basic even though we had direct deposit. The whole report to an officer and sign for 20 or 100 bucks or whatever. At my first unit not everyone had direct deposit. it wasnt required yet for all, just new guys. We still had payday activities and a payrol officer would set up in the arms room and cash checks and pay folks in cash if they really wanted it. I got payroll or cash cage duty more than once.

I see this claim repeated uncritically often in many quarters, including on some high karma posts in other subs. The claim goes broadly that Johnny Cash was a young soldier manning the message receiving system where the notice for Stalin's death was first received by the US.
I would be very grateful to hear whether this event was likely to have occured or is apocryphal.
